TechnoServe Celebrates Successful 40th Anniversary Fundraising Event
OCTOBER 27, 2008 — Washington, DC—TechnoServe hosted a successful fundraising gala on October 20th, 2008, at The Pierre in New York City. The event celebrated women entrepreneurs across the world. TechnoServe honored the following inspirational businesswomen: Mary Callahan Erdoes, CEO, J.P. Morgan Private Bank; Janet Tiebout Hanson, Founder, 85 Broads; and Trudy Fulham Sullivan, President & CEO, The Talbots Inc.
Our Spotlight on Women and Entrepreneurship theme applauded the amazing creativity, leadership, drive, passion and accomplishments being made by women across the global economy—from chief executives in multi-national companies to women in developing countries starting businesses from sheer determination.
One of the highlights of the evening was a speech given by Carmela Sacuj, a TechnoServe-supported entrepreneur from Guatemala. Sacuj spoke eloquently of her struggles and her relentless dedication to start and run a successful mushroom business, providing a better life for her six children and offering jobs and income opportunities for many in her rural community.
More than 400 guests gathered in support of TechnoServe’s mission, helping to provide much-needed general operating funds. An especially lively part of the evening was the “Text to Pledge” auction, during which many guests pledged their support via text messages displayed in real time on the central screens.
TechnoServe recognizes the vital role women play in economic growth, as demonstrated by our commitment to equipping women with the business skills and knowledge they need to succeed. From running women-focused business plan competitions to designing training programs for female dairy farmers to supporting women-run businesses in a variety of other sectors, TechnoServe is hard at work harnessing the potential of dedicated women around the world. Increasing women’s incomes is linked to improved maternal and child health and better education for children. Investing in women’s entrepreneurship creates the foundation for expanded benefits of economic growth to be shared across communities and countries.
