Strengthening the Coffee Value Chain in the Congo
The SVC is providing training to 15,000 coffee farming households, over the course of five years, and delivering technical assistance to cooperatives and other market actors to bolster the specialty coffee value chain in South Kivu. The project aims to increase farmer yields by 30 percent, while supporting local processing businesses to export 50 containers (worth more than $11 million) of specialty coffee and offer farmers higher, more stable prices. The trainings encompass climate-smart techniques designed to improve productivity and coffee quality, linking to inclusive value chains and supportive market services, and the establishment and improvement of coffee washing stations.
By increasing coffee incomes for smallholder households, SVC seeks to provide a long-term economic incentive for ongoing community peace building efforts.
