In southeast Brazil, TechnoServe and the Vale Foundation launched the AGIR (Apoio e Geração e Incremento de Renda) program in September 2018. The program works with several communities in the Brumadinho municipality, supporting them to broaden their local economies by targeting key sectors for growth, and providing entrepreneurship training and support. All within the Vale mining operations’ areas of influence, participating communities range from urban to rural. By capitalizing on market opportunities that make sense for each local context – from tourism, agriculture, inputs for mining supply chains, to gastronomy – these economies can diversify and strengthen local livelihoods. AGIR has already trained 210 participants through its first phase, strengthening both individual entrepreneurs and producer organizations. In the second phase, four group organizations will receive individualized support to improve their business and technical skills, and develop and launch robust business plans.
