Jacqueline Castillo: Learning with Hands in the Soil

In Tomatlán, Mexico, Jacqueline Castillo transformed from a teacher and administrative assistant to the president of Uelitini Tonatiuteotl, a thriving agribusiness. Through the Pequeño Productor Program, implemented by TechnoServe and funded by Walmart Mexico Foundation. Jacqueline and her fellow farmers formalized their business and saw extraordinary growth—increasing sales to Walmart Mexico by 1,400% over four years. Today, their operation includes 17 core producers, with another 105 growers supplying produce, generating 256 jobs annually.

“I started from nothing, learning with my hands in the soil,” Jacqueline reflected. “Now, I see what we’ve built. This business has changed my life, my family’s life, and the lives of so many others.”

Tanmay Pandya: Scaling a Sustainable Solution

In India, engineer and entrepreneur Tanmay Pandya founded Brisil Technologies to tackle two environmental challenges simultaneously: safely disposing of rice husk ash while providing a sustainable alternative to traditional silica production. With support from TechnoServe’s Greenr program—a partnership with the IKEA Foundation and Visa Foundation—Brisil Technologies increased its monthly revenue tenfold between April 2023 and August 2024, created 30 permanent jobs, and hired 35 contract employees.

The company now prevents more than 25,000 tons of rice husk ash from being dumped annually, significantly improving air quality for families across western India.

Lubaba Mekonnen: A Decade of Growth

Ten years after participating in TechnoServe’s Coffee Initiative in Ethiopia, Lubaba Mekonnen’s story illustrates the long-term impact of business training. What began as learning to manage a one-hectare coffee farm as a single mother has evolved into a diversified business empire. Lubaba has increased her coffee income by 200%, established a retail shop, launched a beekeeping operation, developed a eucalyptus plantation, and purchased land for rental properties.

Most importantly, her success has created opportunities for the next generation—funding her son’s university accounting studies and her daughter’s planned medical science education in a country where only 6% of the population holds a college degree.

“Coffee is the basis of my life,” Lubaba shared. “Coffee raised and has taught my children and made me lead a happy life.”
