In Kenya, young people are learning critical skills to build eco-friendly business models and conservation-driven tourism ventures.

Nestled along the Kenyan coastline is Kilifi County, a vibrant ecotourism hub that seamlessly blends environmental conservation with community-driven entrepreneurship. Kilifi’s breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant marine biodiversity offer a unique opportunity to position it as a top ecotourism destination.

Sustainable Development and Building an Ecotourism Boom

At the heart of Kilifi’s ecotourism boom is the BlueBiz Program, a partnership between the Mastercard Foundation and TechnoServe. The program is designed to foster economic resilience in blue economy ventures while preserving the region’s natural ecosystems. BlueBiz empowers local communities through capacity building, eco-friendly business models, and conservation-driven tourism ventures.

The program not only provides financial and technical support but also nurtures a sustainable mindset among entrepreneurs, ensuring that economic growth goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship. By integrating eco-innovation with traditional livelihoods, BlueBiz helps local businesses adopt responsible practices such as sustainable fishing, marine conservation, and waste reduction. Through training, mentorship, and access to resources, entrepreneurs are empowered to build resilient businesses that thrive while protecting the delicate coastal ecosystem.

This holistic approach strengthens community participation, enhances biodiversity protection, and positions Kilifi as a leading destination for responsible tourism. By fostering a culture of sustainability, BlueBiz not only improves livelihoods but also creates a lasting positive impact on the environment. Visitors who come to Kilifi experience more than just its scenic beauty—they become part of a movement that supports conservation-driven tourism, ensuring that the region’s natural and cultural heritage is preserved for future generations.

Esther Kadzo, a participant from the first cohort of the BlueBiz program, shares how the program has played a pivotal role in advancing sustainable tourism. She notes that after showcasing her work at the Blue Economy Summit in October 2024, she secured a fully sponsored speaking opportunity on apiculture (beekeeping) in Zanzibar. As featured in the Pwani ya Wanjanjez podcast, her participation has provided her with valuable exposure and significantly boosted her income.

Key Aspects of the BlueBiz Program

  1. Business skills training for ecotourism
    • 530 program participants trained: Among them, 55% are women, focusing on hospitality and eco-tourism. This reflects a commitment to empowering women in sustainable tourism enterprises.
    • 1,714 individuals mobilized: The program engaged and trained 16 persons with disabilities (PWDs), with 16% female participation, promoting inclusivity in business training.
  2. Enhanced market linkages
    • The program connects local businesses with global tourism networks, boosting community-based tourism opportunities and improving market access.
  3. More income opportunities
    • The training enables businesses to explore diverse opportunities in marine conservation, cultural tourism, and craftsmanship, reinforcing sustainable tourism practices.

Creating Opportunities for Youth

According to research by the Kilifi County government, nearly 36% of Kilifi’s youth live below the poverty line. Sustainable economic opportunities for young people have never been more critical.

Through BlueBiz’s interventions, Kilifi’s ecotourism sector has expanded, engaging many young people in various capacities. From acrobats and traditional dancers showcasing local culture to artisans creating artifacts and beadwork, the industry provides economic opportunities while preserving cultural heritage. Tour guides and boat operators are crucial in enhancing visitor experiences, ensuring tourists can sustainably explore the county’s scenic beauty.

BlueBiz has supported skills training and capacity-building programs, equipping youth with expertise in eco-friendly hospitality, sustainable fishing practices, and marine conservation. These efforts create jobs and foster environmental stewardship, empowering communities to actively protect Kilifi’s diverse ecosystems. By integrating digital marketing and ecotourism branding, the initiative has further elevated Kilifi’s appeal as a sustainable tourism hub, attracting domestic and international visitors.

BlueBiz’s support has not only created direct employment but has also fostered indirect economic benefits, including:

So far, the program has created over 1,000 job opportunities, empowered local communities, and significantly contributed to environmental conservation efforts. With continued investment and innovation, Kilifi is well on its way to becoming a global model for sustainable ecotourism.

Sustainable Development and a Flourishing Future for Kilifi

“Our commitment to Kilifi goes beyond tourism,” said Wanagari Theruri, senior program manager, BlueBiz. “We are shaping a sustainable model that balances economic growth with conservation, inspiring future generations across coastal Kenya.”

More investments are required to ensure long-term sustainability and expansion of ecotourism in Kilifi. By fostering collaboration between BlueBiz, NGOs, and the private sector, Kilifi can continue to thrive as a model for sustainable tourism, supporting economic development while conserving its rich natural and cultural heritage.

The government should take the lead in implementing strategic policies and incentives to attract both local and international investors to Kilifi’s ecotourism sector. By prioritizing infrastructure development, fostering community engagement, and investing in skill-building initiatives, the government can ensure that ecotourism drives economic growth while preserving the region’s natural environment. Leveraging digital marketing and promoting eco-certifications will also enhance Kilifi’s global visibility, positioning it as a top destination for responsible travelers committed to sustainability.

Key opportunities include:

As Kilifi continues to grow as a premier ecotourism destination, BlueBiz will continue fostering sustainability and economic development. Future initiatives include expanding eco-tourism training programs, promoting renewable energy solutions in tourism enterprises, and increasing partnerships with conservation organizations.
